Characteristics of better responses:
- connected research to a personal opinion/finding
- responded in some depth
- related the findings of their research in comprehensible Indonesian.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- lack of understanding of questions asked
- poor sentence structure and limited vocabulary
- little evidence of any in-depth study
- limited connection between a candidate’s research and their own opinions.

Questions 1–3
Characteristics of better responses:
- competent analysis of language with reference to the text (Q.3)
- reference made to ethnicity and different religions (Q.3).
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- not addressing all aspects of the question
- failure to draw a conclusion from the stimulus passage
- use of general knowledge rather than information from the stimulus passage
- indirect reference to one religion only.
Question 4
Characteristics of better responses:
- good understanding of the issues
- message conveyed accurately.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- communication of the message hindered by poor language choices
- lack of persuasive language.
Question 5
Characteristics of better responses:
- perceptive understanding of the text
- language manipulated competently.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- provided a translation of the text rather than responding to the question
- lack of detailed reference to the text.
Question 6
Characteristics of better responses:
- use of appropriate Indonesian
- identified the issue and made clear reference to the text
- included a personal response.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- required text type not addressed
- poor Indonesian expression.
Question 7
Characteristics of better responses:
- demonstrated an understanding of the passage
- well-referenced responses which referred to complex cultural attitudes.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- provided a translation with no attempt at synthesis
- reliance on stereotypical information rather that the information provided in the stimulus text.
Section II – Creating texts in Indonesian
Characteristics of better responses:
- excellent control of a range of language structures and vocabulary relevant to the chosen question
- selection of register appropriate to the audience, purpose and context
- coherent and effective structuring and sequencing of ideas and information
- evidence of understanding of the issue being discussed in the speech
- excellent use of persuasive language (Q.8).
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- little evidence of any planned response
- lack of sequence and structure of ideas with limited use of information relevant to the
question
- poorly expressed ideas with many errors in both vocabulary and language structure.
